2K (two-shot) molding refers to one mold, two materials, and one finished part in a single production cycle. It is widely used for integrated products that require both rigid structure and soft-touch performance, such as handles for various home appliances, electronic enclosures, and automotive interiors.
How Does Two-Shot Molding Work?
The process adopts two sequential injections on one machine with a 180° mold rotation:
1. First injection: Mold hard, transparent or high-temperature resistant plastic to form the product substrate.
2. Mold rotation: The rotary platen turns 180° to deliver the substrate to the second cavity.
3. Second injection: Overmold soft rubber, colored or low-temperature material on the substrate.
4. One-time ejection: A complete dual-material finished part is formed after cooling.
Core Technical Difficulties
Two-shot molding is not a simple combination of two single-shot molds. Its core challenges focus on three key points:
1. Precise shut-off sealing To avoid flash caused by molten material overflow, the sealing extrusion is strictly controlled at 0.05–0.1mm. The tolerance must be accurate to ensure smooth mold opening and complete sealing.
2. High-precision rotary mechanism The rotary platen requires flatness and parallelism within 0.01mm to prevent mold collision during mass production. High-standard rotary mold bases are the key to stable long-term production.
3. Matched material shrinkage Different materials have distinct shrinkage rates. Experienced designers take the first-shot substrate size as the benchmark to calibrate the second cavity. Production risks rise sharply when the shrinkage difference of two materials exceeds 0.5%.
Common Material Matching Rules
Material compatibility directly determines bonding quality:
- TPU: High polarity, perfectly bonds with ABS, PC and PA without complex treatment, achieving strong peel resistance.
- TPE: Low polarity. It needs increased mold temperature or graft modification to bond stably with ABS and PA, otherwise it is easy to peel off.
- PP + Silicone: Large shrinkage difference (over 1.2%) and poor adhesion, prone to severe deformation and delamination.
When to Choose 2K Molding?
Two-shot molds cost 1.8–3 times more than single-shot molds, suitable for the following scenarios:
✅ Mass production (million-level output) to offset mold investment with low unit cost
✅ Ultra-precise soft-hard boundary (±0.1mm tolerance)
✅ Premium appearance requirements with no parting lines
✅ Integrated molding to eliminate secondary assembly and simplify the supply chain
❌ Not suitable for small-batch trial production, simple flat overmolding, or parts with metal inserts.
Case Advantage: For power tool handles, two-shot molding reduces the mass production defect rate from over 8% (separate overmolding) to 0.7%, realizing ultra-precise alignment of soft and hard structures.
