A Question We Get Asked All the Time – Who Owns the Mould?

By Winnie June 25th, 2026 4 views

When developing a new plastic component, the process at JBRplas is straightforward:

You have an idea → We design the component → We create a prototype → We design the mould to manufacture the component → We build the mould → You approve the first-off samples → We manufacture your components → We deliver your components.

Everything runs smoothly through this workflow, but there's one question almost every customer asks along the way:

"Do I actually own the mould?"

In most cases, the answer is simply "yes".

You Pay for It, It's Your Asset

If you have paid for the mould, the mould belongs to you. It is your fixed asset – your production tool. We simply store it safely at our facility, keep it well-maintained, and ensure it is always in top condition whenever you need production runs.

When you place an order, we retrieve your mould from storage, set it up on the machine, manufacture your components, and then clean, maintain, and return the mould to storage until your next order.

Some customers choose to store their moulds at their own facility and bring them to us when required. That's completely their choice – because the mould is their asset.

The Exception: Who Owns the Mould in Special Cases?

There are occasions where JBRplas may invest in the tooling on behalf of a customer – for example, when both parties share the upfront investment during a new project development phase. In these cases, mould ownership will be clearly defined and agreed upon from the outset, documented in black and white in the contract.

If the tooling cost has not been paid for or amortised into production costs, the mould may remain the property of JBRplas. But our principle is always the same: whether it belongs to the customer or to us, ownership is clear, documented, and understood by all parties from day one.

Why Does This Matter?

A mould is not a consumable – it is a production tool worth tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of dollars. Clear ownership means you have full control over your supply chain.

If you own the mould, you are free to export it or move it to any facility of your choice at any time, for any reason. Your options are not limited, and your production does not depend on a single supplier.

If you choose to stay with us, we provide free climate-controlled storage and regular preventive maintenance (standard service every 50,000 cycles). You don't have to worry about storage or upkeep – just place your orders, and we keep the mould running at peak performance.

Our Commitment

At JBRplas, we believe in full transparency when it comes to mould ownership. Whether customer-owned or supplier-owned, ownership should always be clear, documented, and understood by all parties from the very beginning.

We are proud to offer a manufacturing partnership built on clarity, trust, and long-term support.
